2 questions for cosmeticians about hair styling products: wax/mud and root body spray?

Is there any difference between hair styling wax and hair molding mud for building body, definition & hold? If so, what is it? Is one not as effective as the other or are they for 2 different purposes? Also before my stylist blow dries my hair, she spritzes the roots with some sort of root spay that is supposed to add body. I was going to purchase some but someone told me that using plain old hair spray on damp hair has the same effect, is this true? Thanks if you can
